As the martini evolved from its origins in the 1870s, the classic martini was made with gin, not vodka. It wasn’t until the 1950s when vodka began to replace gin. For the purist martini drinkers who frown upon the multitude of different martini recipes used today, here is the classic martini recipe for your enjoyment!

Classic Martini Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 ounces gin
  • ½ ounce dry vermouth
  • Lemon twist or green cocktail olive

Preparation

Stir the vermouth and gin in a mixing glass with ice. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Run the lemon peel around the rim and twist it over the drink then drop it in. Or simply drop in an olive.
