How to Make a Martini

how to make a martini

There seems to be an almost endless variety of Martini’s out there today, so if you want to know how to make a Martini, it really depends on which Martini you want to make; and sometimes who you’re asking. Many purists and Martini connoisseurs will tell you that there really is only one true Martini, and that’s the classic Martini made with gin and dry vermouth. For this article I’ll keep things simple and focus on the classic, as well as mention the popular substitution of vodka for gin.

To begin with, to make a Martini you will need these main liquid ingredients:

  • Gin (or Vodka)
  • Vermouth

In addition, you will need the following:

  • Lemon twist or green cocktail olive
  • Martini glass
  • Mixing glass† (A tall 16 to 20 ounce mixing glass used to stir, not shake the drink. Any large glass will work, including a Boston shaker’s mixing glass.)
  • Strainer (Stainless steel handheld strainer with a spring coil designed to fit snugly over the opening of the mixing glass.)
  • Cracked ice or ice cubes (never crushed ice.)

How to make a Martini

Instructions:

  1. Icy coldness is a must, so be sure to keep the gin and glasses in the freezer.
  2. Stir the gin (or vodka) and vermouth in a mixing glass with the ice.
  3. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass
  4. Run the lemon peel around the rim, twist it over the drink and drop it in. You may also drop in the olive if you prefer that.

That’s it! Now you know how to make a Martini. Of course, there are many variations and you can take a look at some of the Martini recipes on this blog for other ideas.

† This is used when you prefer your Martini stirred and not shaken. Shaking the Martini can “bruise” the gin. Alternatively, Vodka Martini drinkers tend to agree with James Bond and prefer their drink shaken. It all comes down to personal preference. To shake a Martini, use a standard cocktail shaker to do so.

Vodka Martini Cocktails

Posted on July 6, 2009

There are a number of ways you can make Vodka Martini cocktails. The traditional Vodka Martini includes vodka, vermouth and a lemon twist or cocktail olive. Here’s the recipe for the standard Vodka Martini. Aside from this, here are some variations on the Vodka Martini cocktail:

Vodka Martini Cocktails

For a "Kangaroo" Vodka Martini, which is less dry than the classic Vodka Martini, use 1½ ounces of vodka and ¾ ounce of dry vermouth.

For a Dirty Vodka Martini, add some olive juice from the jar of green olives.

For a "bone-dry" Vodka Martini, simply sip chilled vodka neat.

These Vodka Martini cocktails should satisfy most people who prefer vodka as the main ingredient in place of Gin. Of course, remember to serve all your Martini cocktails in a long stemmed Martini glass that has been chilled or kept in the freezer.

Skinny Girl Martini

Posted on June 25, 2009

As I’m writing this post, an ‘official’ Skinny Girl Martini doesn’t seem to exist. It seems Bethenny from the Real Housewives of NYC, was famous on the show for what she called “The Skinny Girl Margarita.” Bethany would order it at bars and restaurants and tell the bartenders how to make it.

Since I only cover Martini’s on this blog, I’m not going to get into how to make a Skinny Girl Margarita, but it shouldn’t be too difficult to find. You can visit Bethenny’s website, www.skinnygirlcocktails.com for more information.

But What About a Skinny Girl Martini?

I’m certain Bethenny will come up with a recipe for this, if she hasn’t already. There seems to be a lot of demand for it out there. Check back for updates.

Grab a copy of Bethenny Frankel’s book, Naturally Thin: Unleash Your SkinnyGirl and Free Yourself from a Lifetime of Dieting.

Take a look at some of the Martini Recipes on this blog. You’ll find some of our favorite Martini’s. Be sure to try them out and come back to tell us what you think by using the rating system below each Martini Recipe.

Vodka Martini Recipe

Posted on

This vodka martini recipe comes from The Ultimate Bar Book: The Comprehensive Guide to Over 1,000 Cocktails. The recipe begins with the following preface:

Otherwise known as the Vodkatini, this clear, clean-tasting cocktail eclipsed the traditional Gin Martini in popularity by the late 1950s, due in no small part to James Bond and Smirnoff simultaneously promoting a stylish preference for Russian Vodka into the mainstream of popular culture.

Vodka Martini Recipe Ingredients

  • 2 Ounces vodka
  • ½ ounce dry vermouth
  • Lemon Twist (or green cocktail olive)

Preparation

Stir the liquid ingredients in a mixing glass with ice. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Run the lemon peel around the rim, twist it over the drink, and drop it in (or garnish with an olive.)

Variations: For a Kangaroo (less dry than the classic Vodka Martini), use 1½ ounces vodka and ¾ ounce dry vermouth.

For a Dirty Vodka Martini, add a dash of juice from the jar of green olives

For a “bone-dry” Vodka Martini, simply sip chilled vodka neat.
