For this article I’ll keep things simple and focus on the classic, as well as mention the popular substitution of vodka for gin.
To begin with, to make a Martini you will need these main liquid ingredients:

There are a number of ways you can make Vodka Martini cocktails. The traditional Vodka Martini includes vodka, vermouth and a lemon twist or cocktail olive. Here’s the recipe for the standard Vodka Martini. Aside from this, here are some variations on the Vodka Martini cocktail:
For a "Kangaroo" Vodka Martini, which is less dry than the classic Vodka Martini, use 1½ ounces of vodka and ¾ ounce of dry vermouth.
For a Dirty Vodka Martini, add some olive juice from the jar of green olives.
For a "bone-dry" Vodka Martini, simply sip chilled vodka neat.
These Vodka Martini cocktails should satisfy most people who prefer vodka as the main ingredient in place of Gin. Of course, remember to serve all your Martini cocktails in a long stemmed Martini glass that has been chilled or kept in the freezer.

As the martini evolved from its origins in the 1870s, the classic martini was made with gin, not vodka. It wasn’t until the 1950s when vodka began to replace gin. As I’m writing this post, an ‘official’ Skinny Girl Martini doesn’t seem to exist. It seems Bethenny from the Real Housewives of NYC, was famous on the show for what she called “The Skinny Girl Margarita.” Bethany would order it at bars and restaurants and tell the bartenders how to make it.
Since I only cover Martini’s on this blog, I’m not going to get into how to make a Skinny Girl Margarita, but it shouldn’t be too difficult to find. You can visit Bethenny’s website, www.skinnygirlcocktails.com for more information.
But What About a Skinny Girl Martini?
I’m certain Bethenny will come up with a recipe for this, if she hasn’t already. There seems to be a lot of demand for it out there. Check back for updates.
Grab a copy of Bethenny Frankel’s book, Naturally Thin: Unleash Your SkinnyGirl and Free Yourself from a Lifetime of Dieting.
Take a look at some of the Martini Recipes on this blog. You’ll find some of our favorite Martini’s. Be sure to try them out and come back to tell us what you think by using the rating system below each Martini Recipe.
This vodka martini recipe comes from The Ultimate Bar Book: The Comprehensive Guide to Over 1,000 Cocktails. The recipe begins with the following preface:
Otherwise known as the Vodkatini, this clear, clean-tasting cocktail eclipsed the traditional Gin Martini in popularity by the late 1950s, due in no small part to James Bond and Smirnoff simultaneously promoting a stylish preference for Russian Vodka into the mainstream of popular culture.
